The present thesis aims at applying both language & culture theory and translation theory to the discussion of how Hangzhou tourism culture disseminates in English. It attempts to explore the effective methods and find possible solutions to the problems found in Hangzhou tourism discourse, focusing on"Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake"—a bilingual book published by Zhejiang university press, to illustrate state of Hangzhou cultural representation, and propose effective ways to enhance cross-cultural communication.This thesis consists of five parts: introduction, three chapters (write out specific topics) and conclusion. The introduction gives a brief account of the development of Hangzhou tourism culture and the significance of its dissemination in English, the relevant literature and the issue to be addressed. Chapter two introduces the data source from which the thesis derives valid examples and reviews two major theories employed in this thesis. It dwells on linguistic universalism, linguistic relativism, domestication and foreignization. In mapping out the key concepts and propositions, cross-cultural communication, whose essence embodied either in English dissemination or in Chinese-English translation, is highlighted. In Chapter Three analyzes expressiveness of the English version of"Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake"at length. By examining the language function and stylistic features of"Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake", we reveal the amazingly complex nature of tourism culture dissemination. By investigating the C-E translation, we detect the lexical, grammatical, pragmatic and cultural errors in translation and reflect on the strengths as well as drawbacks of different translating approaches applied to it. The thesis argues that compromises on different approaches should be a possible alternative. Chapter Four proposes the basic strategies facilitate the designed goal for tourism cultural dissemination from hermeneutic perspective discussed at the beginning. By deliberating on the theme of Hangzhou tourism cultural dissemination, the thesis further explores the relationship between language translation and cultural significance and uncovers the importance of aesthetic value in the communication process. The author deems that aesthetic value expressed in Hangzhou's leisure ambience and cultural temperament is capable of making cross-cultural communication more attractive and fruitful. Finally, some strategies are suggested, illustrated with the revised examples. Holding that both language and culture have been placed in the context of globalization, the author advocates the priority of foreignization and semantic translation and encourages people to take the third way—making an eclectic use of different approaches in inter-cultural dimension when the former two do not work. In conclusion, the author restates the logical connection between the two basic theories and the case discussed in this study, and emphasizes the possibility and feasibility of all the strategies we offered in this thesis.In brief, the thesis discusses the translation of Hangzhou tourism culture in reference to language & culture and translation theories. It provides a critical introduction to the English version of Hangzhou tourism culture, taking the well-known"Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake"as the case, and hopefully helps to promote the dissemination of Hangzhou tourism culture in global era.
