I was initiated into this research with the following recognition: translational activity is interdisciplinary and comprehensive by nature. Translation should be investigated with different approaches and from different perspectives. Translation studies should not be limited to some conceptual analysis, discussions on translation experiences and some normative rules. It needs to borrow and benefit from other disciplines and theories. The scientific aspect of translation studies requires that research methodology should be emphasized. A comprehensive, comparative and descriptive approach is recommended. Translation is not an enclosed process of linguistic transfer. The observation to it should be started from many other aspects and angles. The present study is conducted mainly in light of descriptive translation studies, in which prominent approaches to translation studies are employed. Some western theories have been applied to support the thesis. They are respectively cognitive psychology and descriptive approach. Meanwhile, some traditional translation models are employed here to be commented to provide enlightenments to this study. With the present research, study on the translation process is systematically developed. Some sub-processes in the whole translation process are analyzed and described, which reflect the unique features of translating. Closely connected with the translation process is the background information of the original text, which is the decisive premise for a translator to translating. This study to background information and the translation process is initiative, and will provide translators with some new inspirations.Chapter 1 is the theoretical framework of the translation process and the background information of the original text. Some theories and studies about the translation process and background information at home and abroad are introduced. They all provide the present study with very important enlightening points.Chapter 2 is a systematic study of the background information of the original text. Firstly, the traditional understanding of this definition is demonstrated, and relevant studies in this field have been summarized. Based on this, a new and systematic classification with background information is proposed. The types of the background information are introduced by dividing into two groups: background information of the story in the text and the background information of the author.Chapter 3 is the study of translation process from a new angle. Here, translation process is explained by describing some sub-processes contained in it. They unite to function in the translation process to make a new translated product.Chapter 4 is a fusion of the background information of the original text and the translation process. The background information of the original text functions in every process of translation. Ignoring it, every activity in translation will be imperfect. The last part is a natural conclusion, a correct understanding of the background information is essential. When doing translating activities, translators should always keep the background information in mind. The present research is designed to adopt a methodology that is descriptive, comprehensive, systematic and macroscopic, providing a guideline throughout the study. Translation process and the background information of the original are described through observations of translational phenomena and analyzed in an interactive movement between each other. Based on this a conclusion will be achieved that the background information of the original text function in every sub-processes of he whole translation process. This is an important enlightening viewpoint to translation studies in China.
