The Communicative Language Teaching (CA) occurred in 1970s Catering to the development of global economy, which included two versions. Weak version of the Communicative approach stresses the importance of providing learners with opportunities to use their English for communicative purposes. The strong version of Communicative teaching, on the other hand, advances the claim that language is acquired through communication. Anyway, these approaches can be described as"learning to use"or"using English to learn it". So the college English study of intensive reading, grammar and writing, listening and the etc. aim at and reflect the communicative principle because the ultimate goal of learning language is to communicate. Any language technique formation needs the language material. The basis of the language material is vocabulary. Also through research the scholars are finding that lexical problems frequently interfere with communication; communication breaks down when people do not use the right words. Teachers have never doubted the value of learning vocabulary. They know how communication stops when learners lack the necessary words. And the ultimate goal of learning language is to communicate. So it is unnecessary not to master a certain vocabulary if the communication needs.Chapter One is the introduction of language and vocabulary knowledge such as the definition, vocabulary size, high-frequency & low-frequency words, the importance of vocabulary learning , common characteristics of successful language learners and the status of vocabulary teaching in China.Chapter Two is the illustration of CA, including its upsurge, theoretical basis, definition and features, roles of teachers & students and instructional materials, the misunderstanding and shortcoming of CA.Chapter Three is the concerned knowledge about vocabulary: three stages of vocabulary acquisition, metal lexicon, word senses, Lewis's Chunk theory, and the contrast of Chinese and English vocabulary.Chapter Four is the application of CLT in vocabulary teaching, including my understanding of the communicative competence, vocabulary learning & word meaning enhancing to improve the communicative exactness & expressiveness, further enhancing of the communicative word knowledge, the communicative principle in vocabulary learning strategies, and several tries and sample class in word teaching.
