Modern tourism development is greatly in need of a large number of tourism graduates with high abilities of listening and speaking, and practical skills. In the learning of tourism English, students not only learn language knowledge but also master the language skills. English teaching is not only the"telling"of language knowledge, more importantly, it is a process in which students actively practise,experience and explore in the course of finishing tasks. In order to put what is learned into practice, task-based language teaching is an effective way, which means enhancing students'language ability in the course of finishing tasks, and provoking them to finish the tasks of being tourist guides, doing restaurant and hotel work in their future life.The thesis focuses on the following parts. Firstly, through a survey of tourism oral English teaching and leaning in Wuxi Vocational School of Tourism and Commerce, and the analysis of the research on task-based language teaching and learning in English teaching circle in China, the author brings forward the possible innovations of the research topic. Secondly, through the analysis of the background and theoretical foundation of task-based language teaching, and the analysis of the features and advantages of task-based language teaching, the author crystallizes the practicability and the importance of task-based teaching in tourism oral English. Then, the author discusses how to design tasks to combine the English teaching with tourism specialty, and conducts an experiment between two classes, analyses the experimental results and discusses how to carry out task-based language teaching. Lastly, some thinking and suggestions about task-based teaching in tourism oral English are put forward in order to perfect and promote English teaching and learning in tourism specialty.
