| The folk music of Korean minority nationality is unique andrare for its particular characteristics. It has not only reserved itsspecial style but also enjoys a strong vitality. However, like manyother sorts of music, Korean folk music is also confronting themost serious challenges with the development of modern society.Tonso (a sort of flute) is one of the most popular folkinstruments in Korean minority nationality. It plays a significantrole in the continuance and further development in terms of itsunique sound, special techniques and artistic style. Nevertheless,it has not yet aroused enough attention from the perspective ofethnomusicology. With a case study this article intends to make ananalytical research of its musical stylistics, cultural background aswell as its social functions. Based on abundant materials andextensive fieldwork, the research is conducted thoroughly andanalytically with ethnological and musicological approaches.In order to make a careful field research, the author targetedMijiang Town, "Town of Tonso", in Hun Chun Municipality in theYan Bian Korean Minority Autonomous Region, Ji Lin Province,for its Tonso playing techniques and traditional folk activities.Therefore, conclusive remarks are thus generated from tentativeand analytical investigations on this case for the origin of Tonsoand its stylistically specialty.The first part of this paper is a general introduction to thehistorical study and status quo of Korean music from literaturestudy. The first chapter is about the origin of the KoreanNationality and its tradition and folk music. The second chapterfocuses on the features and characteristics of Tonso and folk music of the Korean Nationality, followed by the field analysis asthe third chapter. In the forth chapter, the phenomenon of Tonsoand its musical culture is discussed. |
