| Lacquer is one of the important traditional Chinese designing arts, which came to the climax in Han Dynasty. It combined aesthetics and practicality. The designing activities took place in specific time and space. The lacquers discovered by .archaeologists in the last decades are the treasures of the traditional designing arts in our country. The modem design of products is rooted in the view of traditional design, so though the essence of the traditional design has experienced a long time, it is of great sense for modem designers to research into it. The purpose of researching into it is to take in nutrients from the marvelous art language. It is the modem designers' mission that this era grants to take advantage of the traditional arts and develop its essence.â… select lacquer in the Chu and Han Dynasties as my main study target as a result of my enthusiasm for traditional designing arts and the spirit to learn from it.â… start with seeking the property of function and aesthetics of our traditional designing arts, combines documents and old pictures, and make use of narration, illustration, compare and inference to research into it.The essay consists of four parts.Starting with an introduction,.â… explained it in the following four chapters. The first chapter is a summary of lacquer arts in Chu and Han Dynasties and related cultural backgrounds. Then following the second and the third chapters focusing on the deep research into the lacquer of Chu and Han Dynasties from functional and aesthetic angles. The second chapter deals with the functional embodied in the design of the Che and Han Dynasties arts in three aspects like functional consideration, design and realization of lacquer shape. Functional research illustrates its practical character and the idea of whole design, series and combination implied in the specific instruments, especially the idea of pursuing appliance. The third chapter analyses the aesthetics embodied in Chu and Han Lacquer, which is the key chapter in this essay. It deals with three aspacts like the style, decoration and color of lacquer. The fourth chapter function and aesthetic based on the previous research. The last chapter is the conclusion of this essay.The conclusions are follows:1. Chu and Han Lacquer was first designed for the purpose of using it. The piratical function was first considered when a lacquer was designed and produced.2. The shape of Chu and Han Lacquer is harmonious, quiet, practical and beautiful.3.
