A Study On The Multiplying Mechanism Of New Words In Chinese

The multiplying of Chinese words is an old topic, into which many scholarshave done a lot of research. In some sense, since the ancestors began to recognize theconcept of "word", they have discussed the multiplied and development of new words.We adopt both synchronic and diachronic methods to discuss word coinage, and at thesame time paid much more attention to the analysis and explanation ofword-formation.This thesis consists of six parts. The first part presents the problem we will study,and makes a summary about the present studying status of the research, and thenpoints out the shortage of predecessors' research. The second part mainly talks aboutthe multiplying factors of new words, including human being, society, language itself.The third part talks about word coinage and breeding words during primary period;and distinguishes some related concepts, and expounds original words and thereproduction of words in detail. At the same time, we also describe the appearance ofcompound words which is the transitional phrase of the multiplying words. In thefourth part we present the phrase of mass-production of new words. According to theclassifying principle of Liu Shuxin, we divided the word coinage into three types:processing previous words, machining and transforming phonetic materials, usingmixed material, which will be expounded respectively in this part. In the fifth part weput the loanwords which includes alphabetic words and the words loaned fromJapanese into the multiplying mechanism. Part 6 is the conclusion.
