A Research On Feng Minchang's Poems And Proses

Feng Minchang (1747-1806), styled Boqiu, was also known by hisliterary name Yushan(fish and mountain), is a mixed well known poet,calligrapher and epileptic, who lived in Qianlong and Jiaqing periods ofthe Qing Dynasty. He was born in Changdunsinanya Township, LianzhouPrefecture, Guangdong Province(today, Magang Village, Oasi Town,Qingzhou City, Gunagxi Zhuang Autonomous Region)He passed the highestimperial examination in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty, and thensuccessively being a high official in Imperial Academy, the Board ofRevenue and the Board of Punishments in Henan province. Later, he becamea teacher in Ouanxi Academy, Yuehua Academy and Yuexiu Academy.Feng Minchang, one of the most famous scholars in his times, isremarkable in the splendid Lingnan Poetry School in Qing Dynasty. He wasrenowned with the same period Li Jian and Song Xiang for his fame. He waswith Zhang Jingfang and Hu Yichang taken as the three of most talentedscholar in south of the Five Ridges, also with Li Jian, Wu Rongguang andZhang Songyue taken as the four of the most famous calligrapher in eastof Guangdong Province. For his contribution to the contemporaryliterature that time, he enjoyed a great fame and was respected bycontemporaries.Feng Minchang visited lots of famous mountains, which made his poemsplain and simple. During his life, he wrote more than 2200 poems, whichis mainly collected in his book a poem collection of Xiaoluofu thatchedcottage. His poems, which are plentiful in connotation and rich in moodof literary, are beautiful arts of literary. His style of writing, whichis blended well of feeling and setting, reflects his shining ideas.Feng Minchang wrote magnificent pieces of works. His articles, nearly300, which is about 700 thousand of words, also mainly collected in hisbook a poem collection of Xianluofu thatched cottage, his works includedalmost all kinds of literatures, such as argumentations, teachingmaterials, reading notes, preface, biography and others. Those articlesrevealed his ideas and opinions towards life, politics, views of the worldand study approach or showed us his affection towards beautiful mountains and rivers or moral integrity, which were not only full of literary talentbut also full of wisdom in the connotation.In this thesis, According to matter of fact, version and documentationof materials, I try to explain a simple and clear viewpoint based on atraditional academic approach of identifying and examining the chaptersand origins. So with the concept and method of modern literary theory,we can have a re-scanning of Feng Minchang' s life and the feature andvalue of his works.
