The Century Encounter Of Literature And Image

Images have long surpassed the border of special art to become a commonplace phenomenon in our current daily life. They are not only changing people's way of life, patterns of thought, but have also posed great challenges to other traditional forms of art. The authors, readers, and methods of spreading literature have all been affected to different degrees. Thus, wide concern and reflections have been evoked in scholars. In 2000, the theory of"literature at its end in a kingdom of telecommunication"come to china, a fierce"debate"was excited between images and literature. Today, the debate is still on. This debate made a wide discussion of numerous issues and has given us much inspiration. So this piece aims to draw some clarifications of it, based on which some personal views will be presented.There are altogether three parts contained in this piece. Chapter one is about the reality encounters of the images and literature, it mainly introduces the background of conflict between the art of images and literature .This chapter includes two sections. Section one is about the rapid growth of the art of images and trend of development. Section two is the perceived fact of literature's being affected and people's reflections under the prevailing wind of pictures and images. In chapter two, two problems concerning the image-literature"argument"are dealt with, namely, the relations between images and literature, literature at its end or not. These two aspects, linked together, constitute the major issues of this argument. Based upon these issues, I would like to make a conduct a comprehensive study of this argument, so as to gain a better understanding of it. Chapter three is about the development of literature, in my opinion the reason for literature's continued existence does not only lie in its own quality but also in those self-contradictions within pictures and images. Literature is an art of language and it is right the languages has endowed literature with traits or characters that are profound, introspective and irreplaceable. To sum up in one word, literature will never die. Only that, under new social backgrounds and circumstances, literature does need to improve itself so as to keep up with times, and to entertain its new readers. It is inevitable that in the process of progressing, literature will become pluralized in variety, but plurality does not mean a lack of principle. As an art of language and literary in nature, literature has its reason of being labeled"Literature".
