English is a required course in vocational colleges and writing is one of the five important skill in the language for students to master. The present situation is , however, in spite of weak grammar knowledge and lack of enough vocabulary, there are lots of problem existing in their writings such as improper word repetition, disorder structure and dull expressions, etc.. The traditional teaching of writing put emphasis on the correction of grammar and misspelling which only found that they failed to solve the above problems. This paper tries to discover a new way by the application of discourse cohesion and coherence theory in the language teaching and analysis of discourse errors to improve students' writing quality.Two classes in Three Georges Electric Power Vocational College are chosen in the experiment. Their discourse errors in writings before and after the experiment are collected and analyzed. The result is that there are a plenty of discourse errors in their compositions. The main reasons are: 1. Lack of basic discourse cohesive skills; 2. weak grammatical foundation. 3. Poor vocabulary. This explained that discourse cohesive knowledge and grammatical teaching are both important in improvement of students' writing situation.The paper consists of five parts. Chapter One is introduction. Chapter Two is a review of literature home and abroad, introducing the application situation of discourse analysis theory in writing and the theory of discourse cohesion and coherence, listing five cohesive skills and theme and rheme models. Chapter Three is a survey on the present situation of students' writing and their attitudes towards it. Chapter Four is the details of experiment including the processes of it and the collection and analysis of the statistics of discourse errors appeared in students writings. Finally the conclusion is drawn to discuss the result of experiment and put forward some detailed suggestions on teaching of writing as well as outline the weak points of the experiment.
