This thesis tries to explore the features of the sub-style of reporting news, aiming to deepen the general understanding of the differences between the news style and its sub-style. Guiding with Halliday's "functional text analyses" pattern, we discus and analyze the differences between two sub-styles and the reasons leading to that from three aspects: concept function, human relation function and text function of the party organ and metropolitan daily. The materials we study are taken from the news paper dated from June 2006 to December 2006.The result shows that there is diversity in different degree between the party organ and metropolitan daily in concept function, human relation function and text function. Firstly, the party organ is higher than metropolitan daily in the speech course, psychological course and the use of post nouns. In human relation function, they are the same in using the stating tone, which is used most frequently. Secondly, the party organ tends to use the other three tones more frequently than the metropolitan daily. Thirdly, in the text function, the party organ uses more conjunctions than metropolitan daily. It seems that the party organ follows and abides the grammar rules more strictly. The different characteristics above are caused by the different orientation and character of the two. Different news character and market orientation and different reader orientation settle the two different report styles of them.
