| In this paper, the importation of the western epistolary novel and the rise and decline of China's epistolary novel during "May 4th" period is a major research topic. In ancient China, epistolary novel did not exist as a literary style, but with the rise of the New Culture Movement in 1917, A large number of western novels of almost all kinds had been introduced into China, including epistolary novels. Then a flock of chinese writers who were sensitive to new literary trends, who had their own thinking towards the social reality, and most importantly, who had great interest in the inner feelings and ideological trajectory of human being had been greatly influenced by these western epistolary novels. They created the first batch of China's epistolary novels, which gives the modern literature history a gorgeous stroke.Epistolary novel came from the West, so it is hard to deny the genetic relationship between western epistolary novels and china' s epistolary novels. But at the same time, because of the special social environment and culture tradition, epistolary novels in China also have their own distinct characteristics. In this paper, based on this particular situation, we will discuss the the importation of the western epistolary novel and the rise of China' s epistolary novel during "May 4th" period.The full text is divided into the following chapters:Chapter1: starting from China's literary tradition, analyze why ancient China did not have epistolary novels as a literary form; and then gave a brief look at China' s epistolary novel during the "May 4th" period.Chapter2: compare China' s epistolary novels with western epistolary novels, and then give the same or similar points between them. Then meticulously inspecte China' s epistolary novels with Germany' s epistolary novels.Chapter3: analyze the characteristics of China' s epistolary novel and the reasons why epistolary novel did not last for a long time in China. |
