Objective To investigate the freshman's psychological status and its effects on their academic achievements.Methods The college psychological status rating scale, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and self-made inventory were employed to evaluate the 755 freshmen's psychological status who were admitted to the school of medicine in 2005. The relationship between the psychological status and academic achievements was also studied.Results (1) The data of 690 freshmen were analyzed. Among them 273 are male and 417 are female, age 18-22 years, mean 8.74±3.90 years. (2) The rates by which freshmen manifest definite and possible psychological symptoms are 14.2% and 31.4%, respectively. The most common symptoms are social withdrawal, depression, compulsion, psychoticism and somatization. (3) The psychological status of those college students from urban area is superior to those students from rural area. (4) The freshmen from not-only-child family have got the higher score than those from the only child family on the dimensions of somatization, anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, psychoticism. (5) The psychological state of those students who have good performance in academic achievements is superior to those who have not. (6) The major factors that affect academic achievements are depression, dependence, impulsivity and family economic status.Conclusion The psychological status of the freshmen is not good and has impaired their performance in academic achievements. Psychoeducation and psychological intervention are needed to improve the freshmen's psychological status and their academic achievements.
