China and Japan are neighbors which are divided by a sea. The two countries communicate constantly with each other since the old days. Japan sent ambassadors to China in the old period to learn the advanced culture, systems etc., which took China as her model. But China fell back Japan because of her conservatism in modern times. Japan became strong and invaded China. China takes little notice of the island country and know little about it although the two countries both belong to the East Asia countries. Little books on Japan are written.In 20th century, the international position of Japan changed greatly, especially after the second world war. Japan stood up and jumped into the groups of developed countries, which make people in the world surprised. People ask,"What made Japan change so rapidly?"Therefore, lots countries pay much attention to her, and China also starts to a new focus on Japan.On Japan, which are written by Dai Jitao arouses the interests of studying of those researchers. What made parts of Japanese critics permitted some opinions in the book? How does Dai Jito realize Japan, and what can we get after studying the book?This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces Dai Jitao's life briefly, including various periods of time he experienced, his thoughts and the background of his thoughts formation; the second chapter introduces historical background and writing motivation of the book On Japan; Chapter Three is the key part of this thesis. It introduces Da Jitao's understanding of Japan. And this chapter is divided into four parts, introducing separately Japanese Shinto beliefs, the characteristics of loving beauty, the martial spirit and Japanese militarism. Through the discussion from several aspects, the author of this thesis aims to find out some deeply things in the book On Japan.
