The 20th century in China is a period during which the thoughts of art education in normal university are developing with great changes. Art education in normal university, as part of social culture, shoulders two missions as extension and innovation of art. The unceasingly changes of thoughts of art education in normal university are driven by developing economy, changing educational form as well as other elements. This paper, against the backdrop of political and educational changes in different ages, investigated the development process of art education from the aspects of culture, society and curricula planning. Within the century, dramatic changes in politics, economy and social system China has experienced, together with collision of ideas in China and western countries, have promoted the exploration of art education in normal university from theory to the practice, which has played a decisive role for developing diversified thoughts of art education in normal university.The paper gives details in the following 6 components:1. The end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of Minguo period is the beginning of modern education. Under the guidelines that "Education was undertaken using the styles and methodologies from western countries, based on Chinese traditional educational thoughts.", the art in Europe and Japan began to be accepted by China. Art education in normal university, rooted from the Confucianism, adopted the educational styles and methods in western countries, and copied the educational style in Japan. It came to the initial stage at that time. Due to historical reasons, art education in normal university at that time was endowed with the character of "training intelligence and improving society", and fully embodied the practicality and the inclination of training teachers. So it was an art with utilitarianism.2. After the Xinhai Revolution, art education developed toward overall development, so did the thought of art education. To foster the sense of beauty and mold sound character are the guidelines of art education at that time. Meanwhile, the view of "To save the nation with art" has influenced art education development. After the year 1927, art education in normal university in the areas controlled by Guoming party, with the bourgeois character, followed the principle of fostering sense of beauty; while that in the areas controlled by Chinese Communist party, with the guidance of serving politics, showed the character of utilitarianism and practicality.3. With the foundation of People's Republic of China, China came to the period of overall establishment of socialism. "It is emphasized that art education in new China has become the component of party construction, and should serve the proletariat, reflect class character in sense of beauty and in art education." It was the guidelines of art education in normal university. At that time, art education in normal university was characterized by political utilitarianism. After the year 1957, it began to develop slowly.4. Art education in normal university was seriously destroyed in the "10-year-cultural revolution". The guidelines for art education at that time is serving politics and fostering persons for propaganda of Mao Zedong's thoughts. 5. With implementation of opening and reform policy, China's education began to catch up with the international trend under the guidelines "Education should face to modernization, face to the world, and face to the future". Art education in normal university, following this guideline, conducted reforms, and great achievements have been made with rapid development. Influenced by the thoughts of art education in western countries, the thought of "appreciation of the beauty" revitalized after disappearance for 30 years. The new idea centering on molding people's character and appreciation of beauty was formed in art education in normal university. Meanwhile, emphasis was put on professional training and improving people's quality in art education in normal university.6. In the new century, against the backdrop of economic globalization and diversified culture, art education in normal university is facing new opportunities and challenges, with the deepening reform of basic education. The thoughts of art education "putting people in the center, taking diversification as main body" formed accordingly. To foster qualified intelligence has become the objective of art education in normal university in the new century.To be summarized, with the development and evolution of art education in normal university, the thought of "absorbing the essence and merging the thoughts in China and western countries" came into being. It focuses on practical and political functions, also on the non- utilitarianism of art education, as the science for fostering sense of beauty. The thought of "integrating overall development of human being into art education" has been being permeating in art education in normal university within 100 years. The face-to-the-world new thought of art education themed as "Putting people in the center and developing diversified culture" came into being. Concurrently, ideologists in art education, based on the education concept absorbed in Japan, Soviet Union and the United States, have endeavored to make the thoughts of art education in normal university be mature gradually. In the 21st century, Chinese art education has come to a new stage. Against the backdrop of global language and diversified culture, the culture in China and western countries are keeping merging. The combination of expanding national culture with absorbing world's diversified culture will be reflected in the thoughts, curricula planning and teaching methodology of art education in normal university, which will further construct China's art education in 21st century in order to closely catch up with the world's steps.
