The ancient painted pottery art is an important part of Prehistoric Art of human being. It'sthe harvest of the primitive people's material life and spiritual life in several thousands years. It'sthe important material for us to understand the society before character coming into being. TheMajiayao Culture is the most flourish time for the ancient painted pottery, and it can be dividedinto the Majiayao period, the Panshan period and the Machang period. The Panshan period andthe Machang period can be also called the Panshan and Machang Culture. It's one of the lastcultures in the primitive society. The Waren pattern is one of the most popular pictures in thePanshan and Machang Culture. It has symbolism and mysteriousness which reflect the estheticsfeature of the end of the ancient painted pottery culture and the time before the Bronze Age. Thepurpose of the paper is to classify the Waren pattern on the basis of comprehensive analysis andto outline its development processs. The paper will analyze the Waren patterns' formation,development, connotation and art feature in a comprehensive and detailed way.The paper adopts the historical research method and the fine arts mimic method, collectingand arranging historical material, and analyzing it from the perspective of fine arts. It adopts thefield survey method and document research method, understanding document data in the surveyprocess. Furthermore, it adopts typology method, analyzing the origin, connotation and art styleof the Waren patterns on the basis of classifying it in detail.The Waren patterns can be divided into four types on the analyses on the images pedigree.They are the Waren patterns with the head and limbs, with the head and arms only, without head,and with a part of limbs. And it also can be divided into another nine types. They are the Warenpatterns with relation to frogs, with relation to human being, with relation to lizards, withrelation to symbols, together with circle patterns, together with gourds patterns, together withparticle patterns, with relation to the water, and with relation to tadpoles. The appearance of theWaren patterns is a result of transmuting and assembling of the ancient painted pottery pictures.Most of the early Waren patterns are the type with the head and limbs. Most of the mid Warenpatterns are the type with the head and arms only or the type without head. Most of the lateWaren patterns are the type with a part of limbs. Continuity, variability, regionalism and contemporary are all the characteristics in the development of Waren patterns. The frog patterns,the polyline patterns, the frets patterns and the sign'卐'after the Panshan and Machang cultureare all from Waren patterns probably. The Waren patterns are closely allied to the environment atthat time. And the genitals worship, ancestor worship and worship of the sun and the moon areall represented in them,it also maybe relate to the ancient calendar, some of them reflect human'sexploration on characters at that time. Waren patterns are representational and ideographic. Theircomposition depends on the shape of the pottery. They are harmonious, symmetrical, and neat,the perspective is not settled, the styles of the lines are various, and the colors are very simple.Totally, the Waren patterns are nearly decorating patterns. Waren patterns have unique region andtime feature. At the same time, they are the "meaningful pattern" as the ancient painted potterypatterns.
