| As part of websites, web page icons bear their own functioning properties, and act as hinges for information exchange purpose between web users and web owners. Design of the icons is involved both in the whole web page design and has its own design strategies and design rules; it needs to be merging perfectly with other parts of web pages in order to provide visual integrality to the page, and has particular requests by its own design. On the birth of website, researches on web icons were always being done while doing researching on whole web pages, rather than an independent subject. However, while the developing of the Internet, web icon's contribution on optimizing website's functions is more obvious and noticeable, which should call attentions from designers, and makes it an independent specific subject. Look into this paper from functionality and artistry of web icons, it analyses and researches on its design rules from a few aspects and has an extension discussion, suggests the possibility of multi-level, multi-angle redesign on web page visual aesthetics.Start with the principle concept of web page design, this paper clarifies the concept of icons which is applied on web design. The second chapter has a systematical explanation on web icon's technical, functioning and artistic properties. The third chapter precedes a complete comparison between icons of web design in virtual world and symbols used in public recognition systems in real word, which states the common and differences of them. Chapter 4 and chapter 5 are the main discussion. They employ designing art methodologies to take a disciplinary analysis on icon design dwell in web design based on categorizing massive samples, including primary design considerations, design routines and design limitations and extensions. The last chapter discusses extensionally on web icon design following above chapters. It brings out the idea of artistry redesigning on visual aesthetics, provided functionality in icon design is satisfied. |
