On Subtitling And Dubbing Translation Within Context Theories

Translation cannot be replaced by other ways of communication. It meets the need to carry on bilateral talks between people, thereby making worldwide interpersonal contacts possible. So it is the same with subtitling and dubbing translation. In the present author's MA paper, the focus will not be as much on the differences between the subtitling and the dubbing as on their same aim and helpfulness to the understanding of foreign movies. In doing this type of translation, the translator should take the context into consideration rather than do it freely and unrestrainedly. This paper is designed to make some tentative studies on how different types of contexts exert effects on subtitling and dubbing translation. Based on a comparative study of the two versions of subtitling in the movie entitled Brokeback Mountain, which won three 78th Oscar awards, the paper tries to analyze this type of translation from the perspectives of textual context, situational context and social-cultural context and aims at demonstrating that subtitling and dubbing translation is more than a change of language form, or rather, an activity interrelated with the space and time, the scene, the ST and TT cultures.
