The Pre-Qin ballads, as the organic constituents of multitudinous acient books in that period, have the extremely deep, broad cultural implication and obvious artistic characteristics. The essay is made up of five parts:The introduction briefly describes the present situation of the research to Pre-Qin ballads. And it points out that the research still needs more work.In Chapter I, an appraisal to the concept of the Pre-Qin ballads is carried on, and their developing vein in the period is combed based on the revelation of their general characteristics.Chapter II, is about the classification and analysis of the contents as well as their cultural implications.ChapterIII,has proven the the Pre-Qin ballads artistic characteristics and corresponding cultural sources. In content, The Pre-Qin ballads are intensely politics-pointed; in dissemination, their articles are closely connected with matters; in style they are simple, plain but rational and deep in meaning. There are several reasons for the above mentioned characteristics. First, the prominent political language of the ballads have something to do with the publics and their wide participating rights. Besides, in that period, the tradition of teaching music and poetry , the consciousness of the ballads' political color. Second, the ballads spreaded in the way of connecting articles and matters. This way is related to the traditional pattom of citing or applicating massive ballads in literature and history, which makes it possible that the Pre-Qin ballads are preserved. Third, their simple language but of deep meanings makes benefit from the ballads' excellence in grasping phenomena properly. Fourth, the formation of the straight forward style cannot be seperated from the early literature's characteristics and strong admiration for normals during the Pre-Qin period.Chapter IV,elaborates the Pre-Qin ballads' status and their influence, especially their unique functions in Chinese poetry history. Their compolicated, dense and precise forms have laid a wide foundation for Chinese poetry's regular scripts to come into being. Meanwhile, thus preparation has been to come into being for the formation of various poems with mixed bodies. Their contribution in breeding those poems cannot be obliterated.
