Mi Dian Zhu Lin (The Palace Collection of Religious Painting and Calligraphy) is a bibliography of the Palace-owned collection of religious painting and calligraphy, which was compiled in Qing dynasty. It is the unique bibliography specialized in religious painting and calligraphy of Buddhism and Taoism down to the history. The book, which loyally recorded the features of appearance, subject, inscriptions of the author and postscripts, colophons and seals of the discriminators, has left abundant literature on the artistic creation and discrimination of the religious painting and calligraphy.The thesis is composed of six parts to analyze in depth the value of Mi Dian Zhu Lin. The Introduction expounds the meaningfulness of the subject of the thesis, the history of the academic study on the subject and the methods of the research. Chapter One elaborates the basic facts of the process of compilation, stylistic rules and layout and version of Mi Dian Zhu Lin. Chapter Two, based on the classified statistics of the subjects of the works in Mi Dian Zhu Lin, found that Buddhism and Taoism have different influence on the creation of the religious painting and calligraphy, after analyzing the characteristics of them. Chapter Three mainly studies the literature value of the inscriptions of the author, which express the purpose and feelings of the creation. It indicates that the major motive of creation springs from the pious belief in Buddhism and Taoism and the pursuit of the artistic presentation of the morals of Buddhism and Taoism. Chapter Four focuses on the value of the postscripts, colophons and seals of the discriminators, which reflect the impressions and reflections of the discriminators and the hand-down of the production. Chapter Five is about the further reflections on the previous study and explodes the influence of Buddhism and Taoism on the compilation, creation and appreciation of the religious painting and calligraphy, from the unique probe in Mi Dian Zhu Lin.
