Studies on contexts have long been underlined and highlighted by both linguistic and other relevant fields. The present study is aimed at detecting the conflict and compromise between the intra- and extra-linguistic contexts in speech communication and meaning understanding through analyzing the relationship between the two basic contexts.Findings show that the differences of the comprehension and mastery of the two contexts somehow spawn the conflict and failure in communication and understanding which may be reconciled through related approaches. In addition to the introductory and concluding parts, the thesis comprises five chapters touching upon these aspects, namely, a literature review on contextual researches, definitions and classifications of contexts, analysis of the causes and demonstrations of the conflict, elaboration on the necessity and means of the compromise and the discussion on the implications of the research in theoretical, practical and pedagogical perspectives as well as further relevant suggestions. The results of the present thesis are only suggestive for studies on contexts and the relationship between the contextual elements. Meanwhile it enriches the study of pragmatics and context theory as well as widening its range of application. More elaborate descriptions and analyses are necessitated in the future studies on contexts.
