The present study is a cognitive-pragmatic analysis of deliberate misinterpretation.Deliberate misinterpretation is a frequently occurred language phenomenon in daily verbal communication. Specifically speaking, in a conversation, the language users deliberately distort the intentions of the other interlocutor by making use of a special context or the fuzzy and unclear expressions in the other interlocutor's utterances so as to satisfy his/her own communicative needs. This kind of linguistic phenomenon is called deliberate misinterpretation, shorten as DMI.With Sperber & Wilson's relevance theory (1986/1995) as conceptual framework, this thesis concentrates on the nature of deliberate misinterpretation in terms of its generating mechanism and its operating mechanism. The objective of the present study is to find answers to the following questions: (1) what are the triggers of deliberate misinterpretation? (2) In what way does the hearer realize deliberate misinterpretation? Methodologically, the present study adopts the way of qualitative analysis and description of the data. The research may be significant in directing our daily communications and providing guidelines for people on how to employ deliberate misinterpretation to ensure the smooth communication.
