| The traditional western translation theories have always studied translation from the perspective of linguistics. However, German functionalist approach has placed the translation research into a wider background with action theory introduced. It is safe to say that functionalism is a systematic translation theory with skopos rule as the primary principle. Functionalists have made theoretical breakthroughs by attaching importance to the intended text functions, addressees, time and place of reception, medium, the motive for the target text, etc. As such, an important concept"translation brief"has been put forward, intended to shed lights on the reasons why the translators adopt various strategies in their translation practice. By applying the functionalist approach to the translation for international communication, translators could help the outside world know China better.The thesis consists of five parts. The significance of the research is elucidated in the Introduction. Chapter One gives a brief description of translation for international communication including the text feature, cultural implication, significance and present situation of the specific pragmatic translation. Chapter Two deals with the functionalist approach and its core—skopostheory, including the concept of"skopos", three rules,"translation brief", etc. The author of the thesis applies the skopostheory to translation practice in the third chapter. By authentic examples, this thesis is an attempt to justify them theoretically and practically as translation methods for recognition, study and application. The author argues that the translators should adopt appropriate strategies while translating, under the guidance of the intended purpose of the target text. In the Conclusion, the positive roles that the skopostheory plays are appreciated in both applications in translation practice and translation theory research. And, the author also suggests that the functionalist approach need a further development.
