A Comparison Between Japanese And Chinese On The Phrase "Shi (yi) Ge NP" And It's Learning

Japanese and Chinese both feature numeric quantifiers. In many cases, the usage of quantifiers is quite similar across both languages, but is not completely the same. The similarity of their usage brings some advantage for Japanese learners of Chinese. There are many aspects in which they are alike. However, some differences exist as well. And these differences could be a large disadvantage for Japanese learners of Chinese. This situation makes it difficult for Japanese people to master the Chinese language.Consider, for example, " (一)个 " from the phrase " 是 (一)个 NP. " Japanese does not allow a quantifier to modify a noun directly. A quantifier always appears with a classifier in phrases, and the classifier is not used independently either.In Chinese, neither " 个" nor "一个" represents quantity. In the majority of Chinese-Japanese dictionaries published in Japan, there is no reference to " (一)个" in the phrase "是(一)个 NP, " and those that do provide a reference fail to provide a sufficient explanation. The circumstances are almost the same in grammar books, and there are few literary works which cover this theme. It is not studied so much in China, either.The present study compares translation from Japanese into Chinese, and translation from Chinese into Japanese. Major themes include an examination of. how Japanese translators express the "是(一)个NP " phrases in Japanese, and how Chinese translators insert "(一)个" into their translation of Japanese noun phrases that do not have an equivalent to" (一)个 " This study aims to provide Japanese learners of Chinese (and Chinese learners of Japanese) the key to understanding the correct usage of "是(一)个NP, " providing a more thorough explanation than what is found in most dictionaries.
