A Study On Yang Huan's Nursery Rhymes

Yang Huan felt empty and unhappy when he was a child, so he always longed for a colorful childhood. The feeling of emptiness drove him to look for comfort and love in his kingdom of nursery rhymes. Yang was sincere in creating nursery rhymes. He did not care about fame or richness, and he put all the effort in his works. Yang was lonely and depressed in his real life, but the pains he had were hardly found in his poems for children.Yang Huan's nursery rhymes are different from others; they are the results of his wisdom and are suitable for children. These three elements have assured the success of Yang Huan in children's literature of Taiwan. Although the amount of Yang's nursery rhymes is less than twenty, they almost have set an example for the creation of nursery rhymes within these forty or fifty years. Many authors follow Yang's style when they are writing the poems for children.Yang Huan's nursery rhymes are categorized into long and short ones. Some of Yang's poems have plots and a number of them are expressed in the way of simplicity. His writing style is simple but full of imagination. Arousing children's interest is the basis for nursery rhyme; this quality of attracting children, as well as other features for children's poem, have been found in Yang's works after the research. Yang has added variety in his writing style and makes it more interesting. He has used lots of symbols, metaphors and personifications in his poems; in addition, his thoughts and ideas stay in his works until now.If we compare Yang Huan's nursery rhymes with the standards we set today, we may think some points in his poems are not up-to-date; however, it did not bring any influence to his contributions in children's literature.
