"In the future ten years, the center of Asian films will transfer to Korean." This is what Zhang Yi-mou, Chinese famous director, ever predicted when he attended Korean Film Show in one film academy. It is indeed true that in the past few years Korean films have sprung up vigorously, which brought the hope to almost all the Asian native films when they face up furiously on-coming Hollywood films. Among all those Korean directors who blew this Korean film hurricane, the young Xu Qin-hao is one of the most outstanding.Xu Qin-hao was born in Quan state, Korea in 1963 and graduated from Philosophy department of Yan Shi University in 1989. After his graduation, he firstly worked in one financial group, and then went on his further study in Korean Film Academy in 1992. One year later, he assumed office as vice-director in films of Travel to Star Island and Single Child, and since then Xu Qin-hao started his steps into movie circles.Christmas of August directed in 1998 was the first film directed all by Xu Qin-hao. In 1997, Jin Guang-shi, one young singer of Korea, committed suicide surprisingly, and his surviving smiling portrait gave Xu Qin-hao much food for thought. One year later, i.e. in 1998, there came Xu Qin-hao's first film on love and death, for the main creators of this film were all born in August, thus the film gained its name of Christmas of August. This film has received good comments from big directors, which helped him become the best director overnight; what's more, this film has become not only the Example Film in Gana Film Festival but also the most popular film in this year's Korean Film Show in Beijing Film Academy. One commentator ever criticized that the biggest harvest in 1998 was the appearance of Xu Qin-hao. In many Korean and Chinese film fans' eyes, Christmas of August was just the gauge of Korean new film and it has opened a new era for Korean film. If there is no this film, Chinese directors and film fans may not enjoy Korean new films' surprising charms. One Fine Spring Day directed in 2001 was Xu Qin-hao's second film, which was also a film cooperated by three countries. The total fund of this film was 1.8 billion Korean dollars, about 1090 Hong Kong dollars, and was shared by three cooperators: Hong Kong director Chen Ke-xin's Appllause Picture Company who provided 15% of the total fund, Korean Sidas Company who provided 45% of the total fund, and Japan Pine&Baboo Company who provided 40% of the total fund. Not a big make but for Xu Qin-hao who was good at doing business with little capital, this fund is more than sufficient. By this film Xu Qin-hao won the Best Contributor to Arts in the 16th Tokyo International Film Festival. For One Fine Spring Day is the sister film of Christmas of August, the show of One Fine Spring Day has been in the limelight enough in Shang Hai International Film Festival in 2002, which even surprised Christmas of August. This was just the reason why Xu Qin-hao's name penetrated its root into Chinese fans' hearts. After One Fine Spring Day, there was another 4 years of no new films. Until the end of 2005 came Xu Qin-hao with his third film April snow. This was a film which became hot before its projection. Because of the solid foundation laid by his first two high-quality films and the together participation of the two Korean current popular idols of Pei Yong-jun and Sun Yi-zhen, April snow was objected to every kind of expectations. To our happiness, Xu Qin-hao did not failed us this time because he succeeded in transforming from his perceptional gentleness in his first two films into his rational thinking in April snow when facing emotional misfortune.Up to now, Xu Qin-hao has just brought three films to the world, but it was these three films that laid his position in Korean film circle, so that when we told about Korean films of 1990's, we cannot avoid Xu Qin-hao and his films anyway, for his films served as a link between the past and future. From him on, he and those pioneering directors after him led the tide of Korean films' suddenly coming to the force in this new century, so Xu Qin-hao has made great contribution to Korean films even Asian films. Besides, Xu Qin-hao who ever majored in philosophy introduced his certain philosophical thinking into his films, thus, his films glimmered strong personal characteristics and different thoughts about human feelings, which is the reason why his only three films are deeper than those common love films and one of the reasons why people love his films. This thesis attempts to discuss the special charm of Xu Qin-hao's films from aspects of his films' themes, narration and scene languages, with the aim of getting valuable experiences and lessons for Chinese contemporary films.
