The 'Lightness''Heaviness' Balance Consciousness In Our Ancestors

My thesis tries to describe and analyze the 'lightness' 'heaviness' balance consciousness in the trilogy Our Ancestors. 'Lightness' 'heaviness' balance consciousness shows not only in his fiction writing theory, but also shows in the trilogy Our Ancestors completely. The thesis is divided into three parts.First of all, I will explain the concept of 'lightness' 'heaviness' and the balance consciousness combining with Calvino's fiction writing theory.Then, I will analyze the 'lightness' 'heaviness' balance consciousness of Our Ancestor in detail. From vertical aspect, the trilogy makes a metaphor in the human being's growing course and pursuing the whole individuality course. They compare to the childhood, the transition from teenager to adult and the adult. Although the three steps exist in the three independent novels, they form a complementary and integral 'human beings' genealogy'. From the horizontal aspect, all the three novels exert themselves in the balance of 'lightness' and 'heaviness', forming different comparative relatively integral space. The Cloven Viscount uses the form of epic and fairy tale to clear up the heaviness by making reading distance. The Baron in the Trees, the free imp comes into the practical life, making balance between the 'lightness' of freedom and the 'heaviness' of reality. The Nonexistent Knight, wandering and groping for between the spirit and body of both light and heavy. Besides, the background in the trilogy also implicates the balance of 'lightness' and 'heaviness'. Here the backgrounds echo the themes and character image in a higher level, in this case, the trilogy reaches highness of giving voice to human being's struggle.Finally, my thesis will trace to the source, try to present the balance consciousness of Calvino's life from his family background, growing environment and life experience, in order to understand his balance consciousness generally and deeply.
