Since the mid- and late-20th century, modern designing genres and concepts in the west have brought tremendous changes to miscellaneous artistic designs in China. The brand new international cultural atmosphere has posed not only unprecedented demands to Chinese artistic design, but new subjects to be addressed. The designer should see to both international identity and national cultural traits in the designing process.This article, on the one hand, aims at pointing out the tendency of ignoring Chinese characters as an art form and that of blindly following the western style, and on the other, attempts to trace the meta-form of Chinese characters as a designing factor, and study its initialization and unique nature. By analyzing the formation rules of Chinese characters, this article explores the foundation of such formation and its unique visual appeal, and discloses from an aesthetic point of view the graphic formation and aesthetic features of Chinese characters. Bountiful designing cases are provided to discover the appliance of Chinese characters in modern graphic design, and to analyze and classify major designing techniques and concepts. This article also intends to address the design of Chinese characters in the context of nationalized design, and, by means of case analysis, to reveal and rectify various misunderstandings as to the design and appliance of Chinese characters.
