Cultural Revolution poetry, which is based on Mao Zedong's idea of revolutionary literature, is a peculiar type of literature developed in a special politico-cultural context. The most basic rhetorical quality of this type of poetry is "movement rhetoric", and the subject of rhetoric is changed from the individual to the masses, resulting in the phenomenon of "a poet is not a poet and everyone is a poet" and the disappearance of individual experience of poetry. Consequently, the whole poetic community is divided into two parts: the open and the underground. What the open texts of poems offer to the reader is basically social and political information and ideological beliefs, most of which are vent of political enthusiasm. Some outstanding literati political lyric poems, apart from representing language properties and cultural grades of those days, display as best as they can, charm and beauty, which poems must have. This is different from the straightforward rhetorical feature of "workers, peasants and soldiers' political lyric poems". The texts create the "red" rhetorical image groups and select the "Red Sun", the most typical rhetorical unit as the brilliant symbol of Chairman Mao and the Party.Underground poetry hands down artistic forms of classical poetry, draw on the experience of foreign poetry writing techniques and creates Guo Lusheng poetic rhetorical image: "a man far away from home". Besides trying their best to keep their spiritual individualities, poets keep the spirituality of poetry; one saves oneself while saving poetry. The rhetorical quality of April 5th poetry has both properties of the open texts and the underground texts of Cultural Revolution poetry. The poems have the complexity of the middle state, spread politics and have certain esthetic quality."Literati political liric poetry", underground poetry and outstanding works of April 5th poetry show that there was poetry in the Cultural Revolution period. Our generalization of rhetoric of Cultural Revolution poetry — straightforward vent of enthusiasm — reveals the unique features of the style of Modern Chinese poetry of the Cultural Revolution period, which will be useful for the research of the history of Modern Chinese poetry, the history of Chinese rhetoric and the history of Modern Chinese. Our research approach emphasizes the stretches from linguistics to literature and art, from discourse analysis to text analysis, and from inner-text context to context out of text.
