China boasts abundant natural and cultural scenery, which causes greater and greater influx of foreign tourists year after year. With the development of tourism industry in China, more and more tourism materials are translated into English, which in turn brings the vitality for translators to improve the quality of the tourism materials translation so as to expand the reputation of Chinese scenic and cultural spotsDespite its importance, tourism materials translation had hardly drawn any attention from the Chinese translators until around 1990s, when really significant studies on this topic began. In recent years, many researchers shift their attention on tourism materials translation. However, the present studies on tourism materials translation in China are far from being satisfactory: most of the studies are based on a mere descriptive analysis of examples rather than on a theoretical foundation, and although culture had been discussed repeatedly, recent linguistic and translational theories have scarcely been applied to the discussion. This paper presents functional adaptation as the guiding principle for tourism materials translation. It involves in the theoretical basis from the angel of text analysis and functionalism, and the special ways of achieving functional adaptation will be discussed finally. The first chapter introduces the present research situations, the problems occurring in tourism material translation and research objectives of this thesis, etc.The second chapter generalizes the features of the tourism materials and the typology they belong to.The third chapter presents the theories on which the thesis is based, namely, Nida's theories of functional equivalence and receptors'respond and German functionalism in details as well as the contributions of them. And it analyses theoretically the application and significance of the theories to C-E tourism materials translation based on the functions of tourism materials and the features of tourism materials translation. The forth chapter, the most important part of the thesis, advocates functional adaptation as a general principle to direct the practice of tourism material translation since the great linguistic and cultural differences are reflected clearly and typically in Chinese and English tourism materials. After that, feasibility and necessity offunctional adaptation is to be analyzed. .The last chapter makes analysis of many examples to further illustrate the application of this principle to tourism materials translation from a practical point of view, and proposes some methods in C-E tourism materials translation. At last, as what is hold by functionalists"the end justifies the means", what we aim at is to center on the readers, to take the strategy of functional adaptation and finally to provide the readers with sufficient and proper information after comprehensively analyzing the lingual and cultural differences reflected in Chinese and English tourism materials. Thus, the foreign visitors can admire the magnificent scenery in China as well as comprehend the long and plentiful culture of China.
