Hemingway is one of the well-celebrated American writers, a remarkable stylist and the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. The code heroes in his works and his outstanding style have won him numerous readers. He is the writer of the great works — The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea and the stories of Nick Adams.Although in China the knowledge the people have got about Hemingway is confined to his novels and novelettes and they have little idea about his short stories, Hemingway has been regarded as the master of the art of short story in the western world and his short stories have aroused the people's wide concern in the circle of literature, being on a par with his novels and novelettes. Hemingway wrote nearly 70 short stories in his life and published 4 short story collections. The great number and the wide range in subject make Hemingway's short stories an essential part for Hemingway's fiction.The thesis makes a thorough exploration and analysis on Hemingway's short stories. First, the author discusses how Hemingway wrote a story, in other words, Hemingway's writing skills, including his well-known iceberg theory and omission art. In addition, the author talks about the focus of narration in his stories, objective narration way, and telegraphic dialogue, all of which make up the Hemingway style. Second, the author discusses why Hemingway wrote his stories in the above ways, in other words, Hemingway's creative intention. The author finds some clues from his talks, articles and some interviews about him. Finally, the thesis focuses on what Hemingway wrote about in his stories: the themes of his stories. In this part, the author will take three stories, Hills Like White Elephants, The Killers and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber as examples. Through the overall discussion of the stories themes, the author attempts to draw a conclusion: Hemingway's stories always have more than one theme; the theme of his stories is always multidimensional. The readers can provide a variety of explanations and understanding about the theme of his stories, which is caused objectively by Hemingway's writing skills, and subjectively by Hemingway's creative intention.The thesis falls into five parts.
