As an important factor, motivation influences the process of second language acquisition. It is considered by many to be one of the main determining factors in success in developing a second or foreign language. The new English curriculum puts great emphasis on language motivation and takes it as one of the goals of English teaching. Motivation is at the heart of many of the most important concerns of teachers. It is the main reason for students to carry on and maintain their studying activities. Anyone can learn a language with motivation.Gardner and Lambert introduced their classic constructs of "Integrative" and "instrumental" motivation in the learning of a non-native language. Motivation can also be classified into "Intrinsic motivation" and "Extrinsic motivation" according to some educational psychologists. There are some other classifications of motivation and theories.Art school students, a special community, are not valued by the whole society. Generally speaking, these students' English level is low and some of them don't want to learn English. Based on the saying "Motivation is the key to all learning", it is necessary to investigate English learning motivation of the art students to better motivate their English study.In this thesis, statistical methods are employed to analyze data from questionnaires on motivation orientation of English study of the art students. And semi-structured interview records are supplemented for explaining the untouched problems in the questionnaires. We find that the art students show particular characteristics of motivation. The study revealed that: 1) art school students who have poor basic English knowledge and think highly of major classes, but lights of culture classes; 2) most of the art school students' English motivations need to be adjusted; 3) most of the art school students' English motivations are instrumental motivation or certificate motivation; 4) Successful learners have intrinsic motivation, unsuccessful learners have...
