| Journalistic English serves as a way to widen one's knowledge of international community and plays a significant part in our daily life. As the start of a news report, headlines play a special role in news reporting. Thus we should place special emphasis on the characteristics and translation of news headlines.Based on a huge collection of materials, this thesis focuses on the study of news headlines in terms of their grammatical features and translation: The brevity and condensed structure, the dramatic quality of musical sounds and the humorous sense of language all contribute to making English News headlines an"attention-getter". In other words, English news headlines'writing distinguishes itself from other styles of writing by its special characteristics on the grammar level. When it comes to translation, to reproduce the functions of English headlines also requires translators'agility and ingenuity in applying semantic and rhetorical devices, thus the present author makes an attempt at some tactics in achieving a desired effect of humor, phonology and the like.With grammatical and semantic probes into the headlinese, such a study seeks to benefit the readers in their understanding of what the editor wants to convey. |
