The British immigration has a long history. The immigration policy of America, Canada, Australia and other British commonwealth all use the British immigration regime for reference. The categories of the British immigration regime mainly include family reunion, economic communication and attracting foreign investments and highly skilled labors from abroad while deterring the undesirable ones outside its borders. The new immigration policy of HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Programme) was first carried out on in 2002,officially came into force in 2003, and becomes a permanent immigration scheme. This paper mainly deals with the development of British immigration system after World War II and the current immigration structure, in which HSMP is an important part.With a neutral stance, the author takes a look at the legislation, instrument and influences of the UK's immigration regulation and control; and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of those measures taken by the British government with her own understanding. Some important matters in the immigration area such as asylum and deportation are also discussed in a detailed way.Finally, on the basis of those discussions and analysis, the author presents some proposals for the further development of the British immigration regime.
