English News Headlines: Characteristics And Translation

With the gradual deepening of the opening policy and her entry into the WTO, China needs more and more exchange with the outside world. And the Chinese people are more eager to know the world and to be known by the world. A large amount of information is transmitted by news media especially English news reports. So the translation of journalistic English becomes without saying a bridge for the communication.Headline is the essential part of news reporting. As few people have enough time to read the news from the very beginning to the end, most readers try to learn as much information as they can in the shortest possible time. It can be seen that the headline plays a peculiar role in news reporting. So the translation of news headline should not be neglected.This paper is composed of four chapters. In the first two chapters, the present author expatiates on the features of English news headline. Specifically, the definition, function and classification of English news headline are presented in chapter one. In chapter two, the language features of English news headlines in different aspects such as grammatical, lexical and rhetoric levels are explained and examples are cited to support it.After the introduction and explanation of English news headlines, but before going into the translation discussion, it is believed that it is quite necessary to do some comparison between English and Chinese news headlines, because this will help to deal with the possible problems that translators would come across in the process of translating.
