Intertextuality Of Text In Translation Studies

Translation has a long history, but translation theory has developed very slowly. As a communicative activity across languages, cultures and disciplines, translation has been influenced by many factors in theory and practice. Intertextuality is a basic and controversial term and a theory of text in contemporary literal criticism, it came out in the 1960s and later became the marked term by postmodern and poststructuralist critics. Translating is an intertextual activity in essence, so the theory of intertextuality should be influential to translation theory and practice. For this reason and this end, the thesis attempts to make an exploration into the correlation between intertextuality and translation studies.The whole thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter one deals with the study background of the theory of intertextuality and examines the definitions of intertextuality from different schools. Inspired by Bakhtin's theories of dialogism and polyphony, criticizing the insensible factors of structuralism, Julia Kristeva (1969) put forward her .theory of intertextuality as problematizing "originality" and "authority". The concept of intertextuality has been defined variously, but there is no accepted definition because of the pluralistic development of modern society.Chapter two attempts to explore the origin, development and value of intertextuality, and its influence on different theories. As a term in semantics and rhetoric, intertextuality can be traced back to Saussure, who stressed the abstract relationship among signs, but Bakhtin put it in a social dimension insisting that all languages are dialogic. Combining the two ideas, Kristeva put forward the theory of intertextuality — that any text is constructed as a mosaic of citations and any text is the absorption and transformation of another. Later, Barthes, Derrida, Genette, etc. developed it to a new stage. As a text theory, the category of intertextuality is vaJuabie for breaking the myth of originality, enhancing the understanding of textuality, paving a new way for literary criticism and research and describing a new space for texts which can be used to analyze different types of texts.
