Objective: The aim of this study is: to explore the intra-structure of mental health and develop a mental health scale for middle school students of Henan province(MHS-HN); to examine the reliability and validity of the new scale; and to find out the mental features of those students and abnormal cases according to the anthropological variance analysis.Method: 954 students come from city of Zhengzhou, Anyang ,Sanmenxia and Jiaozuo by random sampling method were surveyed. The samples consisted of 447 male students and 507 female students. The reliability analysis included the mean inter-item correlation, Cronbach's α,split-half reliability. The validity analysis included content and construct validity. Independent-Sample T Test and One-Way ANOVA were used to analyse the date. Results: (1) Through the item analysis, the mental health scale for junior middle school students of Henan province (MHS-HNJ) consists of 36 items and the mental health scale for senior middle school students of Henan province (MHS-HNS) consists of 35 items, both of them included 6 subscales: antisocial behavior, neurotic behavior, study problem, relationship between parents and children, school interpersonal relationship, and adolescent crises/sex psychology.(2) Internal consistency analysis showed that the mean inter-item correlation is good( F=113.1919 , P < 0.001 ( MHS-HNJ ) and F=137.0114 , P < 0.001(MHS-HNS ) .The total scales' Cronbach's a coefficient, Spearman-Brown split-half coefficient are 0.7759. 0.7713 (MHS-HNJ and 0.7374. 0.7070 (MHS-HNS) and the six subscales' Cronbach's a coefficient ranged from 0.3497 to 0.6237.(3) Interscale correlations study showed that the correlation between subscale scores and total scores range from 0.456 to 0.794 , most of the coefficients are above 0.6; among all the subscales has significantly correlation (P<0.001).
