Lexicon in colloquial style is a group of words and phrases which are normally used in spoken language. This is very important in Chinese lexicon. However, only a few intensive studies were made on lexicon in colloquial style.This thesis studies 730 words and phrases in colloquial style which are selected from Xiandai Hanyu Cidian, in order to summarize features of these words and phrases. An analysis of syllabic structure, inner morpheme , and semantic formation is made and the proportions are calculated.The results show that the majority of words and phrases in colloquial style are disyllabic words, and that polymorphemic words in lexicon in colloquial style lexicon occur six times more frequently than monomorphemic words. The results also show that monosemantic words are the main part of in lexicon in colloquial style. A comparison between lexicon in colloquial style and other words and phrases is also made in this thesis. In contrast to other words and phrases, lexicon in colloquial style is more lively and common.Lexicon in colloquial style is inseparable from words of dialects. Most of the words and phrases in colloquial style stem from words of dialects used in the north of China. Most of the words and phrases in colloquial style emerged in modern times, especially in the Yuan Dynasty. Lexicon in colloquial style is marked in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian (2005). However, marks are different between the Xiandai Hanyu Cidian (2005) and other three edition of Xiandai Hanyu Cidian(1978,1983,1996). The difference shows that to mark lexicon in colloquial style is very difficult.
