Ma Liangjun (1871-1957), who styled himself Shantang, was the renowned modern great Muslim Akhund in the Northwest and a famous scholar. He loved islam when he was very yong and rooted in Xinjiang after he becam famous, preaching and rectifying religious vogue, strengthening local Muslim's unity and harmony, creating favourable condition for unity, religious moderation and social homonial development in Xinjiang.He vigorously developed Church education, and formed "Ma door" styled in Shanxi school in the first half of the 20th century, contributing much to the creation and development of Church education in Xinjiang. With the development of modern education, he also kept up with the times, promoted the creation of modern education, and put into action, thereby opening the Xinjiang first modern education. He wroted books and articles, and his dozens of Arabic, Persian and chinese Islamic books, made a significant contribution to Islams in Xinjiang—even in China Hui's culture and education.This dissertation is to restore the original appearance of history based on written records, oral circulation and a wide range of social surveys, along with Ma Liangjun's history activities for clues, to focus on and assess Ma Liangjun's activities as follows: First, a brief description of Ma Liangjun's experences of studying before he came to Xinjiang. Second, Ma Liangjun's preliminary activities in Xinjiang, including his activities of opening schools and teaching as well as the experences of his setbacks in Hami and Dihua. Third, Ma Liangjun's the medium-term activities in Xinjiang—during the 20 years in Yili. This is the peak period of his religious career, and his development of the Church education in particular. Fourth, in the latter part of the activities of Xinjiang, from Yili to Dihua, continuing his religious cause. He was frequently engaged in political activities. First he was in prison, then he advocated peace and national unity out of prison. He also actively ran for the liberation of Xinjiang. After the peaceful liberation of Xinjiang, he took an active part in the propaganda of chinese communist, making unremitting efforts for peace, development and progress of Xinjiang.All throughMa Liangjun's activities in Xinjiang, a conclusion can be drawn: Ma Liangjun always stuck to his patriotic thinking of peaceful reunification, mild and pragmatic national ideology, rational religious thinking and open minded cultural thinking. He absorbed Islamic orthodox ideas with Confucian doctrine of the mean, and formed his own sound, rational and pragmatic thinking characteristics.
