The "Yun" Category And Its Poetics Spirit In Song Dynasty

The category of "Yun" is a fundamental poetic conception in ancient literature theory system. Its origin and development are complicated, say mostly, it is a rise period in Wei Jin era, a developing period in Tang Dynasty, a mature period in Song Dynasty, and in Ming Qing, it is finalized. I try to make the formation and developments clear in this thesis, especially study its performance and its meaning in poetics of Song Dynasty."Yun" comes forth in the later period of East-Han Dynasty, it means the aftersound of the music. Trinity of poem, music and dance is the most important form in Chinese ancient art, so "Yun" category which comes from musical realm originally is led into verse field immediately. As the time pass by, people knew the important meanings of sound in verse creating and appreciation. One of the prominent characters is comment of impersonation. In the ages of Wei Jin, "Yun" is extended to evaluate the beauty of personality, which means personal grace or temper in abstract. At the same time, it can criticize the painting and calligraphy, as well as analyze verse beyond phonology field. In the forepart of Tang Dynasty, "Yun" means personal charm, after that, the new aesthetics emerged, in respect to the annotation of Jiao Ran and Si Kong-tu, verses take on various characters which contain profound meanings with the simple appearance. Further more, Su Kong-tu starts the theory of "Lingering Charm" in later.In Song Dynasty, the "Yun" category carries on the past and opens a way for future. There are more than one case in this period, either with person or with writing. In regard to poetic realm, the discussions of Su Shi, Huang Ting-jian, Li Zhi, Fan Wen, Zhang Jie, Chen Shan, Jiang Kui, Zhang Biao-chen, Bao Hui are most typical.
