Ye Lingfeng was a special writer in the literary world in Shanghai in the 1920s—1930s.He became famous when he was still in his early twenties, and his novel-writing career lasted about 13 year (1924—1937). Most of his novels concerned about individual's emotions which represented the profound psychological facts of love, discussed the philosophy and skills of love and pursued the life happiness which conformed to the natural personalityYe Lingfeng was one of the second generation in the Creation Society. The first generation in the Society such as Guo Moruo, Yu Dafu had influenced his works greatly. The self-image in their works did inspire Ye Lingfeng in his creating self-image. In its early period, the Creation Society started the Romanticism, which implied the New Romanticism, that is, all kinds of Modernism of the western literature. Then Ye Lingfeng inherited and developed it. He accepted the outlook of life and literary viewpoints of Aestheticism and Decadence, and he took the way naturally that themed"self-searching"which the School of Modernism concerned about very much.This paper discusses Ye Lingfeng's novels in pursuit of Self from three aspects:ⅠYe Lingfeng's adolescent feelings. Ye Lingfeng shared the same adolescent feelings with Yu Dafu, but had different implications of self-image. Ye's novels were full of the Romanticism of May 4th Movement which pursued the Self-emancipation and emphasized on self-consciousness .He used the writing techniques of the psychoanalysis and mental awareness to describe the romantic love between young men and young women and reflected the perfect concept of humanity so-called.ⅡThe soul drift of the urban youths. In the early 1930s, Ye Lingfeng's novels of New Sense School made his pioneering function more outstanding abruptly in the literary world, the characters in his novels showed the characteristics of Aestheticism and decadence which, in fact, responded to the decaying feature in Yu Dafu's novels .His novels during the time reflected that the struggling Self was pursuing a...
