Brush stroke of line, as one of the most significant technigues in traditional Chinese painting, is widely used in traditional fresco-creating in Grottoes. Yulin Grottoes in Anxi ,well thought of as the variety of Mogao Grotooes in Dunhuang, are famous for No. 3 Grotto which was ceated in a tipical Xixia Style during the late period of Xixia Kingdom. In《Wen Shu Bian》and《Pu Xian Bian》, brush lines plays an important role in expressing emotionally aesthetic value in taking on a unique artistic look of the times and turning over a new marvelous leaf in the history of Chinese Grotto art.The article consists of 5 chapters and the first two give a sumarry of the contents and forms as well as the origion of the two sutra-related paitings, based on an objective statements so that readers can possibly get a relatively clear knowledge of thse two frescoes. As a artistic product in a certain age, its acomplishment is bound to be greatly influented by various elements.Chapter 3 is mainly about the historical and cultural background of these two frescoes based on an objective discription of the social lives and cultural development as well as the religious sentiments in art. The main part of the article is chapter 4 and 5 which deal with the aesthetic chariteristics and the historical contribution as well as the development. An all-around analysis of the unusual artistic quality, the unique expressing style and the developing stages will lead to an overall cognition and a deep comprehension of the two sutra- related paintings at a higher level. Therefore, a further step is for us to take to keep this form of traditional art alive and significant in a perspective of line strokes in modern paintings.
