In the 19th century, children were neglected in China and people's awareness of children was very weak. As a whole, the awakening and growth of the awareness of children started from the 20th century. The thesis considers that translation can reflect the awakening and growth of the awareness of children from a special perspective. "The Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde is one of the earliest fairy tales introduced into China. The translation of the story threads through almost a hundred years' time from the late Qing Dynasty to the new era after China's reform and opening-up in 1979. However, the previous studies in it seldom touched upon its translation. The thesis, with the help of the Skopostheorie, carries out a chronological study of the Chinese versions of the story and aims to trace the growth of the awareness of children reflected in them.The research studies the awareness of children reflected in the Chinese versions of "The Happy Prince" before and after 1949. Before 1949, there were only four Chinese versions of the story. With their respective addressees, purposes and translation strategies, the four versions display the awakening and early growth of the awareness of children. They also suggest that the awareness was still very weak before 1949. From 1949 to 1980, no new Chinese version of the story could be found and the awareness of children remained to be very weak. After 1980, the Chinese versions of the story displayed a strong growth of the awareness of children. This growth can be seen both beyond and within the translated texts of "The Happy Prince". The growth beyond the translated texts can be divided into three categories, namely, the growth of publishers', editors' and translators' awareness. And the growth within the translated texts is mainly reflected by the adaptation versions.
