For the last forty years, foreign scholars have made great achievements in reading theory research. In general, there are two models of reading process: discourse model and psycholinguistic model. Although the development has gone through the process from emphasizing language factors to non-language factors and has greatly enhanced our awareness of the reading process, these theories have only given part of the truth of reading pedagogy in that they overlook the importance of developing students'higher-level thinking which will promote their evaluative and appreciative comprehension. This thesis integrates contemporary reading theories into the framework of constructivist education taxonomy, and suggests its application to the design of reading exercises and activities.
