The 19th temperance movement are a famous social reform movement in U. S. A. It has altogether experienced more than 100 years time from the start to the end. The tens of thousands of Americans warmly jump in the movement. This had widespread and profound influence to the society of American..The organization of the temperance movement—Woman' s Christian Temperance Union is the outcome of the uprising women movements in the reform era of the 19th Century American. It followed the previous prohibition waves and promoted it to a new climax. It had extended social influence.In 1919, the constitutional amendment of prohibited alcohol to become effective, however in 1933, this bill is abolished, the temperance movement from rose to fell, urged us to seek its historical enlightenment. Kinds of factors result the defeat of the temperance movement. For exmple,. its theory has the age limitation so it unenables keep up with the age development ;the social economy base has been destroyed ;the temperance movement has the contradiction with the liberalism principle;the people were satisfied with prohibition;most importantly,prohibition caused smuggling .Although the temperance movement failed in the end, WCTU has had the positive role to American and the American women. For exmple, the bill of prohibition passed and strengthened women's unity; improve woman's ability and position ;formed the early feminisim.
