| The thesis tries to explore areas of film dubbing translation on the basis of relevant translation theories, including Skopos theory and any other theoretic framework that can give some insight into this study.The thesis starts with some basic aspects of film dubbing translation within the framework of actional theory, gives a translation brief and defines the importance of the participants involved in film dialogue translation. The communicative pattern and features of film dialogues are also illustrated as the groundwork for the study.This thesis discusses suggestions for a purpose-oriented film dubbing translation from three perspectives after an identification of the intended text functions of the film dubbing translation: explicitation, shortening cultural distance and handling stylistic problems to achieve intended text effects. Firstly, the translation process should start on the pragmatic level by deciding on the intended function or functions of the translation, and which of these functions can be achieved in the target culture by means of an instrumental translation, or whether a documentary translation would be more appropriate. In film dubbing translation, the translator will often settle for renderings that resemble the original less closely but get across easily what he considers to be adequately relevant aspects of the original. Therefore, an instrumental translation is often adopted. Secondly, a distinction is then made between those functional elements of the source text that will have to be reproduced to be adapted to the TL film audience's background knowledge, expectations and communicative needs. The translation type then determines whether the translated text should conform to source-culture or target-culture conventions. Finally, the translator has to deal with stylistic problems. He has to determine whether and to what extent an imitation of the source-text style could be an appropriate way of achieving the intended function and what effect this will have. |
