The Pragmatic Approach To Translation Of Dialogue In Fiction

The dialogue is an important component of a fiction. It can portray a character's disposition and psychology, provide the background for the reader, set off the air of the fiction and develop the plot of the story. It is multifunctional and can be regarded as the most memorable part in the fiction. Its translation is worthy of great attention, but little study has been done of it. This paper puts forward the pragmatic approach to dialogue translation and lists some basic principles and common crafts to faithfully reproduce the equivalent effect of the original. The whole paper mainly presents the application and significance of such an approach by discussing the significance of the speaker's illocutionary force in dialogue interpretation according to speech act theory and illustrating the way to use the cooperative principle in fictional dialogue translation. These discussions offer us a clearer view of what the pragmatic approach concretely appears, and meanwhile, give us a deeper insight into the benefits this approach will bring to us.It is not realistic to adopt this approach to dialogue translation as the absolute way and expect it to solve all problems in the rendering process. However, it has its unique place in the dialogue translation to help to achieve equivalence.
