In the period of anti-Japanese war, after Kuomintang government moved the capital to Chongqing and made it as an alternate capital in wartime, Chongqing immediately became the national center of polity and culture.At that time, many litterateurs who were from the occupied areas went up to rear area to doing propagandas and activities about the anti-Japanese war, which created a great deal of literary works. The descriptions of Chongqing and the narration of it as literary background simultaneously appear in these writings. Chongqing city in literature has taken on a particular scene that is different from the depictions of Beijing and Shanghai, and it becomes an indispensable theme in anti-Japanese war literature. But the writers' imagination and creation of Chongqing is bond up with their life style and their attitudes towards life in this city. They began their hard drifting on this strange and prosperous land, experiencing the physical and physiological sufferings, and continue their writing to this city. The emergence and reconstruction of Chongqing's literary image and its superposition and distance with the city show the relationship of privity and rejection between men and the city in the wartime.This thesis will start with the presenting way of Chongqing theme in literature to discuss the relationship between writer and city, the difference between literary Chongqing and that of Beijing and Shanghai, and the integral image and general picture of literary Chongqing. Then it will analyze the influence and significance of wartime Chongqing theme on the modern literature of China and the contemporary literature of Chongqing.
