Recalling the 1960s the United States, the Vietnam War, back civil rights movement, the student movement, and the women's movement had come. As if the 1960s was a period full of political movements, but from another point of view it was not. Hippies traveled all around the country without any dollar, calling for people to embrace love and peace. Young artists flourished and their works shocked the conservatism persons. Legalized homosexual relations began, and the homosexual persons could be unique social groups. Culture changes brought greater enlightenment.The word counterculture was translated as anti-legitimacy culture or anti mainstream culture or counter-culture and so on. According to the domestic integrated books published in recently, I adopt the counter-culture as the name of counterculture.In Chapter I, I define the words counterculture and sixties in the historical category, and I discuss the backgrounds of the countercultures in America. The most notable events were the movements of black civil rights and anti-Vietnam war.Counterculture means some a kind of conception of worth, culture and way of life, which are prevalent in the 60s youth of America literally. It was always called new left movement, which young students advocated to reform the society and the politics by the radical method. And it was called counterculture, which showed revolt by the method of discontinuing the students'studies, taking drugs, indulging etc. It's the essential of the article to analyze the movements of culture, which rebelled the tradition in American of 1960s.1960's is a period which needs to definite. The American scholar, Frederic Jameson, believed that the beginning was led by the transitions of the third world seism. Thus the beginning of 1960s is 1959. The American black civil rights movements, women's rights movements, and gay rights movements transformed until 1974. Some went end, some broke up, and some became more radical.
