Where To?

This thesis attempts to probe into the"turn"in translation studies by discussing the characteristics and relationship between the"cultural turn"and the"translator's turn", pointing out that both of them recognize the originality and pluralism of translation.Before 1970s, translation has been viewed as a sub-branch of linguistics. Gradually translation studies begins to focus on the cultural aspects of translation and on the contexts in which translation happens since that time. And 1980s sees the greatest achievement in translation studies, the"cultural turn"noticed by Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere, then, the apparent distinction between cultural and linguistic approaches to translation studies has disappeared. Translation is a complex manipulatory process in which translator plays the most important role, so the"translator's turn"is put forward by Douglas Robinson. However, as far as I know there are few people who concentrate on the two"turns"at the same time, which serves as a stimulus to the author's research.This thesis consists of four chapters:Chapter one is the introduction. This chapter is divided into three parts. Section one is literature review. Section two reviews the background of the study. Section three provides the significance and the focus of this thesis, and then introduces the structure of this paper.Chapter two focuses on the"cultural turn"in translation studies. This chapter is divided into four parts. Section one defines"turn"and the"cultural turn"in translation studies. Section two discusses translation studies before the"cultural turn". Section three probes into translation studies after the"cultural turn". Translation implies the communication of the intercultural and the intracultural, then cultural pluralism become the focus of translation studies after the"cultural turn".
